Blow Hole (HUMMANAYA)

So Hummanaya is the place to see a natural sea blowhole in Sri Lanka. From what I have heard growing up, this is the only such place in Sri Lanka. Considering the interest of foreign tourists to visit this place, I think there may not be that many in the world.

We began our day trip to Hummanaya from Matara, It was a leisure day trip and first we headed to Dickwella Village for drinks, beach, pool and lunch. Dickwella is a small, very small town further south about 12 miles from Matara, It's a great scenic drive along the coast line. Dickwella Village is a nice resort type hotel. It has been there at that location for a very long time. I remember when it's was a big deal when it was built at that location because there was a dispute with local fishermen for beach access rights. That was at least 30 years ago. It looks like all live in harmony and benefit from each others existence now.

Ok after an awesome time at Dickwella Village we are off to Hummanaya. It's about 1.5 miles further south from Dickwella in a even smaller village called Kudawella (meaning little beach). It's worth noting this is off the main road. You need to park your vehicle for a fee in someone's yard and walk about 1/2 mile up an unpaved path set through closely built little houses. Walking shoes a must. It's fun to walk that path because you get a glimpse in to ordinary people's houses and daily activities. There are little stalls that sell snacks, fruits, dried fish varieties, etc. It's so much fun to buy, taste, support the local economy and explore hands-on local culture. Don't forget to speak with locals as well. As long as you are respectful, people are most friendly, open and helpful. At the same time never forget about your safely and safety of your belongings. On your way to the blowhole, stop by the exhibit that explains the science behind it. Notice the many young couples who very likely have sneaked out of their homes for an outing(Dating before marriage is still taboo in Sri Lanka). Once you reach the blowhole you may have to wait for sometime see the next occurrence! You will constantly here 'hooo' sound of the ocean thereby the blowhole was said to have gained its name 'Hummanaya'.
